TopBrewer and the environment

7 ways TopBrewer can help you meet your CSR goals

Corporate Social Responsibility is a hot topic right now for businesses. It is increasingly important that organisations are committed to doing their bit for the environment and ticking all of the right sustainability boxes. At Scanomat, we are committed to producing energy efficient coffee machines that are less harmful to the environment. In doing so we strive to help our clients to meet their own sustainability goals and energy reduction targets.

TopBrewer has been developed to be highly energy efficient and uses up to 90 per cent less energy in the idle state than most bean-to-cup coffee machines. With multiple revolutionary features, TopBrewer is the logical choice when choosing an environmentally-friendly coffee machine. Here are six examples of how TopBrewer can contribute towards your sustainability credentials.

Power-saving mode

We actively encourage our clients to use the TopBrewer power-saving mode as, unlike most other bean-to-cup machines, there is no hot water tank to keep warm. In power-saving mode, TopBrewer has a very low 7-watt energy consumption. With the built-in schedule system operators can set a timer to switch to standby automatically at quiet times.

Flash-heater technology

Unlike most coffee machines, there is no hot water boiler in the TopBrewer. Instead fresh water is flash-heated for each and every drink. Not only does this mean that there is no boiler continuously heating water and wasting energy, but it also improves the quality of the drinks and gives individual temperature control of hot water, brew water and steam.

Save on bottled water

A major benefit of TopBrewer is that it combines multiple drinks systems into a single minimal unit. There is no need for a separate hot and cold water tap as TopBrewer does it all. Dispense freshly filtered hot water for tea and integrate a modular still & sparkling water system for chilled drinks. Save on bottled water and reduce your carbon footprint.

No harmful milk cleaning chemicals

Cleaning chemicals can be very harmful to the environment but are often needed in bean-to-cup coffee systems with fresh milk in order to kill harmful bacteria. The TopBrewer has been designed so that harsh cleaning chemicals are not required, instead the milk lines are flushed after every drink to remove any residue. The removal of chemicals from our cleaning process is not only beneficial to the environment but is also a cost saving to our clients.

TopBrewer made with recyclable materials

Made with recyclable materials

TopBrewer is manufactured mostly from steel, which is the most recycled material in the world. In it's recycled state, steel saves 80% CO2 emissions and 75% of the energy needed to create steel from raw materials. Steel can also be recycled infinitely without loss of strength or durability, therefore we can be confident that the materials we are using today will be recycled in the future.

Sustainable Coffee sourcing

Our strategy is to develop direct trade relationships with coffee growers around the world. As it stands, a large majority of our coffee is already sourced from farms where we have a direct and transparent trading relationship, and where we are collaborating with the coffee growers to help them to set and achieve their sustainability goals. By working with the same plantations, year after year, we can ensure consistent high quality products, and also provide the farmers with the stable financial support needed to improve their cultivation methods and working conditions.

Amokka coffee recyclable packaging

Recyclable Coffee Packaging

All of our coffee bags are made with recyclable plastic which has almost 50% less carbon footprint across the Product Lifecycle than traditional multi-layer aluminium coffee packaging.  Traditional coffee bags normally include several layers of different materials, such as foil, plastic and paper. Multi-layer packaging is very difficult to recycle and aluminium foil in particular has a heavy manufacturing environmental footprint. The labels on our coffee bags are also made with recyclable plastic and are designed to double up as a sealing tool to reseal the bag and keep the coffee fresh. We encourage our clients to check with the local authority before adding our coffee bags to their recycling collection as, although our bags are made from plastics that can be recycled, recycling programmes can differ from council to council.

CSR White paper

Both the coffee you buy and the way you serve it can have a huge impact on both the environment and the farming communities, and poor CSR policies can have a huge impact on your business.   A future-proof asset, such as TopBrewer, is a sure way to ensure you are reducing your carbon footprint and focussing on providing a sustainable solution to your team.
