6 Amazing Health Benefits to Drinking Coffee!
There have been lots of reports in the news lately about the various health benefits of drinking coffee so we thought we would round up a list of six of the biggest potential health benefits associated with drinking our favourite beverage.
But don’t be tempted to go too crazy with the caffeine, the European Food Safety Agency advises that people drink no more than 400mg of caffeine a day – that’s the equivalent of around five espressos!

Coffee could protect the liver
Researchers from the University of Southampton have suggested that just two cups of coffee a day can reduce the chances of developing liver cirrhosis by up to 44%. The world’s growing obesity crisis has seen the risk of liver disease increase massively over recent years and cirrhosis is now estimated to cause the death of around 1 million people every year. A study by the World Cancer Fund also found strong evidence that drinking coffee may reduce the risk of liver cancer often associated with alcohol abuse.
Coffee may lower the risk of developing Alzheimers
A 2009 study following 1,409 people over two decades found that drinking three to five cups of coffee a day may reduce the risk of developing Alzheimers by up to 20%. Caffeine is a stimulant and the study suggests coffee may provide long term benefits for the brain as well as the short term pick me up we experience day to day.
Coffee could reduce the likelihood of suicide or depression
A Harvard study of over 200,000 men and women has revealed that drinking two to four cups of coffee per day may reduce the risk of suicide by up to 50%. It is suggested that caffeine may act as a mild antidepressant by increasing the production of certain neurotransmitters in the brain that can affect mood.
Coffee may reduce the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes
Coffee contains polyphenols, magnesium and chromium which have been linked with lower rates of type 2 diabetes. A study by the Harvard School of Public Health found that people who increased their coffee consumption by just one cup of coffee per day reduced their risk of developing diabetes by up to 11% and drinking three to four cups could reduce the risk by 25%. In contrast, those who reduced their coffee consumption seemed to increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 17%.
Coffee could reduce risk of Multiple Sclerosis
A recent study has suggested that drinking 6 cups of coffee a day could reduce the risk of developing Multiple Sclerosis. Experts say caffeine has certain properties which can reduce inflammatory responses in the body and central nervous system.
Coffee may reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease
Studies have shown that coffee drinkers have up to 60% reduced risk of developing Parkinson’s disease. The caffeine in coffee seems to be the main factor in this case as the same effect is not seen with decaf coffee drinkers.
